Planned expansion of deportations
Since the federal government changed, officials say 173 men have been returned to Afghanistan under existing return agreements between Germany and Afghanistan.
The Interior Ministry reports that preparations are being made to extend the deportation procedure to Afghans who are not suspected of any crime. This would broaden the group of affected persons beyond those previously convicted.
Authorities stress that each case must still be examined individually according to applicable law. Factors such as personal circumstances, potential risks in the country of origin, and cooperation with Afghan agencies are to be considered.
Human rights organisations warn of possible rights violations and call for a transparent legal basis. The federal government has not yet taken a final decision, but is reviewing the legal and humanitarian aspects.
