Opposition files emergency motions against planned health insurance reform
Opposition factions in the Bundestag said they feel pressured by the planned health insurance reform. To prevent the vote on the healthcare savings package, they have filed emergency motions with the Federal Constitutional Court.
They assess that there is a good chance the court will temporarily halt the legislative process. The opposition argues that the savings package would lead to deep cuts in benefits, violating the principle of solidarity financing.
The federal government, however, remains calm about the initiatives. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said the reform is necessary to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the system and that the planned measures are socially balanced.
Parliamentary debate on the savings package is scheduled for the coming weeks in the Bundestag. Possible amendments, which could be introduced by both government and opposition factions, will also be discussed.
