Family with three children rescued at Krippenstein
After a hours-long hike in deteriorating weather, the parents and their three children were rescued from the Krippenstein and flown to the valley by a rescue helicopter. The trek began under initially favorable conditions, but the weather worsened rapidly and unexpectedly.
The Krippenstein is part of the Dachstein massif in Upper Austria and is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. The area is known for sudden weather changes, especially during autumn and winter, which can turn a routine outing into a dangerous situation.
Due to the abrupt onset of poor weather, the family found themselves in an emergency situation and was unable to continue the descent on their own. The terrain in that sector is challenging and requires proper equipment and experience to navigate safely.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched and transported the family to safety in the valley. The operation was coordinated by the local mountain rescue service, alpine police, and emergency medical services, who used the helicopter to evacuate the individuals swiftly and without further risk.
Authorities stress that in case of sudden weather deterioration in the mountains, help should be summoned immediately. They advise checking the forecast before setting out, carrying appropriate clothing and gear, and calling the European emergency number 112 (or the Austrian mountain rescue number 140) in an emergency.
