Suicide Prevention in Austrian Prisons
Authorities report that, despite identifiable deficiencies in the prison system, many suicides can be prevented.
The cited shortcomings include staff shortages, outdated facilities and gaps in psychological care.
Nevertheless, an established prevention programme exists, comprising regular risk assessments, intensified observation and training for prison officers.
Experts stress that early recognition of warning signs and low‑threshold access to counselling are crucial to lowering suicide risk.
The Austrian Ministry of Justice oversees the implementation of these measures and commissions regular audits by external specialist bodies.
Furthermore, cooperation with the Austrian Society for Psychiatry is being expanded to provide targeted support and aftercare for affected individuals.
