Heat‑related output reductions at French nuclear plants
The French nuclear safety authority announced a temporary reduction in electricity generation at three reactors. The step is part of a broader effort to keep river temperatures from rising excessively due to the discharge of cooling water.
In addition to the three reactors now operating at lower capacity, seven other units have already been throttled. The decision follows weather forecasts predicting continued high temperatures and limited rainfall over the coming weeks.
Government officials stress that safety of the facilities and protection of the environment remain paramount. By limiting the volume of warm cooling water released, authorities aim to avoid river temperature spikes that could harm aquatic ecosystems and water quality.
Operator EDF is cooperating closely with the regulator to monitor the affected reactors and adjust output as needed. EDF indicated that the planned reductions will not jeopardise long‑term electricity supply, citing sufficient reserve capacity.
The regulator will conduct regular river temperature measurements and may require further adjustments if thresholds are approached. Updates will be communicated to the public through official channels.
